Parent Groups Announce Statewide Community Forums

"Public Education Now: Reform and Resistance in New York State"
See schedule below

NYS Allies for Public Education, in conjunction with parent and educator groups across the state, will hold a series of community forums to examine and discuss state education policies relating to high-stakes testing, Common Core Learning Standards, teacher evaluation by student test scores, and the sharing of student data.  Parents and community members will gain a better understanding of how these issues are currently impacting their child, and they will walk away with tangible ways in which they can advocate on a local and state level to protect the rights of their children.

Last spring saw the advent of a massive resistance movement to current education policies in New York State.  Since then, educators, parents, students and concerned citizens have united in a historical and unprecedented effort to challenge the educational policies currently being implemented by Commissioner of Education John King, The Board of Regents and Governor Cuomo in New York.  What is equally unprecedented is the refusal of leadership at the State Education Department to heed these concerns and rethink their current mandates.

Parent Lisa Rudley from Westchester County explained that, "Both parents and teachers want to know how they can partner together to protect children and public education in the face of education reforms that cost millions of dollars yet do nothing to improve education.  The community forums will give people that opportunity."

Dates and locations for the forums will be announced at
www.nysape.org   Currently, there are 3 events scheduled and over 20 are expected between now the end of March.  The first event is scheduled for January 18, 2014 in Oneonta, NY.  This will be followed by Westchester County on January 23, and another at SUNY New Paltz on February 19.  Other expected locations include Buffalo and Long Island.  New York State Allies for Public Education represents forty-five grassroots parent groups from every corner of the Empire State.
